Hello to my friends and family! I hope that this communication finds you well and enjoying a safe, healthy and hope-filled beginning of 2023! 

As many of you are aware, I have been a steadfast friend of Easterseals Eastern PA for over 45 years. I’d like to share a little bit about my long relationship with Easterseals. I actually first encountered Easterseals as a 14 year old camp volunteer at its Philadelphia summer camp. I immediately fell in love with that kind of work and decided to become a physical therapist. After graduating from Temple University, I worked for Easterseals right here in Berks County from 1976 through the mid-90’s. I have been an active member of the Board for the past 10+ years. I actually also recently had the pleasure to mentor the lead physical therapist currently working at Easterseals in Berks to revise and publish a chapter that I had written in a nationally known textbook on Pediatric Physical Therapy. Our staff are truly talented, compassionate and knowledgeable in their work! Our Mission says loud and clear how we aspire to make a difference in the lives of children and young adults and their families challenged with a disability to have a meaningful life: Easterseals Eastern Pennsylvania creates life-changing solutions for individuals with disabilities and their families in their community by increasing independence, maximizing opportunities, minimizing barriers and enhancing quality of life.

I’m also impressed with the wide variety of services Easterseals offers from early intervention services for young children to autism diagnostic services that can open the door to services for families with children on the autism spectrum, to individualized physical, occupational and speech therapy services for children of all ages, and job training for young adults. It’s all part of unlocking each person’s fullest potential and supporting their families.

Many of you already know how passionate I am about my job as a child development specialist, and the work we do at Easterseals Eastern PA.  I truly love my job, and what I do.  Recently, I have had the pleasure of working with various early childhood programs and organizations across the nation.  It has been an eye opening experience.  I realized that the services Easterseals offers are more valuable than ever, especially Make the First Five Count (MtFFC).   

Nationally, the pandemic has caused a ripple effect within early childhood education and intervention.  Whether it be closing of child care centers and early childhood programs, shortage of qualified staff in the field, or increased waitlists to see developmental pediatricians or other specialists, the need for supporting families has grown in an overwhelmingly way.  While there are many programs that support families and their child’s development across the nation, MtFFC has been able to help bridge this gap, fill in the “missing ingredient.”   

Through local funding, MtFFC has grown from being an free online child development screening program to providing families and other organizations with “guidance” through activities and resources, “strategies” through one on one virtual support, and “education” through parent and staff workshops. We have also been helping families by making referrals for early intervention and other community agencies for support, and we assist parents in supporting and understanding their children’s development.   

I am committed to continuing to celebrate children’s milestones and support the families and the community in which I live and work through Make the First Five Count. In April I will be celebrating my 5 year anniversary with Easterseals. I started out in the Rec/Respite Program, became a Camp Director, and then began my journey as the Community Supports Program Scheduler/Special Programs Manager for Berks and Lehigh. I am very passionate about the Consumers that I serve. Through the years I have watched them become empowered with self-confidence while giving their all by volunteering at local businesses and organizations. These interactions assisted our Consumers with increasing their interpersonal communication techniques, providing opportunities to learn job skills, and to become active participants in the Communities in which they reside. Many of our Consumers have hobbies and interests such as: arts and crafts, cooking, dance, exercising, yoga, etc. I would love to see our Consumers have the opportunity to take part in these activities, but we need your help. Please consider supporting our mission. These Consumers give so much to the Community and bring so many of us such joy, it would be a great way to acknowledge their hard work and dedication. Harrison is a bright and friendly child diagnosed with autism. His relationship with Easterseals began through the Early Intervention program. Both of his parents work in the education field and they wanted to make sure Harrison would be prepared for the demands of school. So just prior to the start of kindergarten, they initiated outpatient services for both speech-language and occupational therapy.
