MARIPOSA MUSEUM AND WORLD CULTURE CENTER

The Mariposa Museum in Oak Bluffs serves as a unique cultural resource in the heart of Oak Bluffs' commercial and historic district, exploring African American and African diaspora history and experience.  Through art exhibits, public programs, educational offerings to schools, the museum offers a space in which individuals, friends, and families can enjoy and be inspired by the black artists, storytellers, scholars, activists, and others while creating life-long memories together. 

Rooted in the inclusive history and spirit of Oak Bluffs, the museum's purpose is to inform, inspire, and engage in ways that affirm the importance and value of black history, culture, leadership, and creativity, through the power of art as a storytelling vehicle. Our vision is to  build connection around these themes between all people who live in, visit, and gather on Martha's Vineyard around these themes, as a way of fostering peace, equity, and understanding in our world.

The Mariposa in Oak Bluffs has a sister museum in Peterborough, NH. The two museums share a single legal 501(c)3 identity (Journeys in Education) and are governed by a single board of directors represented by members of both the Martha's Vineyard and New Hampshire communities. In addition to working to make each museum as sustainable it can be, the collective board and staff seeks ways for leveraging our unique, two-museum footprint for regional and national impact -- and for affecting change beyond our brick and mortar structures.

Many people have told us the Mariposa Museum in Oak bluffs is the right idea in the right place at the right time. With your support and involvement, this idea can grow and flourish as a beautiful resource serving many, contributing to the creation of a world as we all wish it could be.
