Help us celebrate the Dominican Center's 25th Anniversary of supporting residents in Amani.
Our Story
The Dominican Center was founded in 1995 by a group of Dominican Sisters who wanted to address the needs of women in the Amani neighobrhood and help them make positive change in their community. Through the years, the Dominican Center has been responsive to the changing needs of the community and partners with residents to achieve and sustain neighobrhood integrity, economic self-sufficiency and family well-being in the Amani neighborhood.
What We Believe:
- The Dominican Center partners with Amani residents to increase access to quality education, improve health outcomes within the community and contribute to economic development.
- The Dominican Center supports a resident-led revitalization effort to foster social change.
- The Dominican Center is a resource for residents in the areas of adult education, housing and building neighborhood capacity, in addition to offering support in a welcoming, compassionate and responsive environment.
- We believe Amani residents are experts in their own lives, experiences and needs, and can use these to positively contribute to the improvement of the community.
- We value the support of our donors and partners, and strive to be an accountable steward of the resources generously shared with us.
Community Impact:
Adult Education –
- More than 700 students have received their GED or HSED.
- Chrome Book Distribution to active students during Covid pandemic, to continue adult educational tutoring at home.
Resident engagement –
- Supported the creation of a resident-led revitalization plan with three areas of concern: Neighborhood Safety, Housing and Economic Development, and Education and Family Well-Being.
- Host monthly virtual resident townhall meetings to discuss critical issues during pandemic, such as covid testing, food resources, youth educational plans, eviction issues, and civic engagement.
Neighborhood Revitalization –
- Bi-weekly block clean ups organized by resident leaders to eliminate blight and debris buildup throughout the neighborhood.
- Amani Block by Block Program partnership (Dominican Center, Amani United, Ezekiel Community Development Corporation, Milwaukee Christian Center, LISC Milwaukee, KG Development Group, and Legal Aid Society of Milwaukee) renovating Amani one block at a time.
Youth Engagement –
- Amani Youth Council organized by resident youth leaders providing youth voice to neighborhood revitalization.
- A March Against Gun Violence event designed by youth, aiding and guiding their efforts to turn their visions into realities.
