COVID-19 is affecting families in Northern Orange & Sullivan Counties in a variety of ways:
743 Club kids face IMMEDIATE food insecurity
75% of our families live at or below the poverty line and face potential job losses
100% are isolated at home in this crisis
I have children and parents to care for. What if I get sick? - Mother of 2 boys
What if I lose my job and can’t pay my rent or buy groceries? - Caregiver of 5
If our kids do not go back to school “soon” how will I be able to work? - Dad of 3
How will my kids keep learning? - Mom of 1
Food and Nutrition
Kids who rely on the breakfast and lunch programs at school will be able to access healthy meals through their local school district.
In partnership with the Pine Bush School District, the Town of Wallkill Boys & Girls Club supplied 150 backpacks filled with school supplies and healthy snacks!
In partnership with Operation Feed Phase II, the Town of Wallkill Boys & Girls Club supplied over 2,000 food service gloves, picked up and assembled 609 meals and 655 snack packs with over 3,800 individual snacks to families in Fallsburg, Liberty, and Monticello.
LEARNING
We are strengthening our virtual programming to ensure kids are still learning in the out-of-school time through targeted and engaging activities. Our virtual programming launched on our social media platforms on April 7th & continues today, with 8 targeted posts each week with newsletters of activities and videos of our staff demonstrating fun, safe, educational activities for our Club kids & families.
SOCIAL SOLUTIONS
Staff members are calling current Club members families at home so they can hear a familiar voice and have someone to talk to during this scary time.
200 Check-in calls with the families occur monthly.
150 handwritten note cards sent home to Club kids letting them know we are thinking of them.
ONE STEP CLOSER: Summer Camp Is Open!
With all of the proper safety guidelines in place, we have opened our Town of Wallkill Summer Day Camp! It opened on July 13th and the fun has begun! Camp looks a little different but over 130 campers are enjoying the sunshine and fresh air with their friends!
OVERCOMING THIS CRISIS TOGETHER
The Town of Wallkill Boys & Girls Club will re-open our Clubs in the fall, once we know it is safe to do so. In the meantime, kids and teens need us now more than ever before, and our organization has responded with innovative programs to meet their needs.
When we do reopen, we will have a huge job ahead of us – to get the kids of Northern Orange & Sullivan Counties back on track to their Great Future! We will have to stem learning losses and make sure kids do not slip through the cracks.
Long-term, our Club will be vital to rebuilding our community.
For parents and families getting back on their feet, the Club will save them money when funds have never been tighter, provide a safe place for their children to go while they are working, and offer an evening meal or snack for low or no cost. For kids, the Club will restore a feeling of safety that has been lost as they face empty grocery store shelves, sick friends and neighbors, school cancellations, and the 24-hour news cycle.
Club programs, such as “Power Hour” and “Money Matters” will get kids back on track. And maybe most importantly, at the Club, kids and teens will get to be kids again: playing with friends, spending time with mentors and heroes, watching guest speakers, and going on field trips.
