The Barbell Saves Project was founded to change the way society treats individuals going through the recovery process from addiction to drugs and alcohol. Our goal is to help as many people as possible through exercise and nutrition which is a current area that is missing in addiction rehabilitation programs. Through our mission, The Barbell Saves Project has supported thousands of individuals and has seen remarkable transformations in people’s lives by incorporating group fitness and nutrition into their recovery.
Individuals like Ben Johnson who says, "I’ve never been around people so open to talking about their weaknesses and failures. It was refreshing, and it made it easy to be honest."
Ben has been attending The Barbell Saves Project for two months and still has a long road to recovery. However, through our programs, we meet people where they are.
We are NOT the type of program where when you fail you get thrown out. Instead, what happens is that we will welcome you back. We will give you a hug and encourage our members to get right back to work!
Every donation is pivitol to our mission.
Within one year as an established Non-Profit, we have successfully partnered with Community Medical Services to secure an 8000 sq ft fully equipped gym that will begin running classes in February of 2021. This facility will act as the first ever treatment center of its kind to house an Addiction Recovery Treatment Center as well as an exercise and nutrition facility to truly help our community members suffering from addiction in the Valley.
Our goal is that this becomes a beacon in the recovery community and acts as a national model to not only serve our community members but also help others across the United States.
The Barbell Saves Project is also working to purchase a truck and trailer so that we can physically bring our lifesaving mission to individuals at surrounding Rehab centers. We understand that when an individual enters a Rehab center, they are not always allowed to leave. By meeting people where they are, our goal is to increase their chances of sobriety by instilling healthier lifestyle habits during their treatment journey.
90-95% of addicts fail at sobriety. So, what makes The Barbell Saves Project Successful?
- As a registered 501c3 non-profit providing community-centered exercise classes that are programmed to meet the needs of addicts, our programs are reviewed by a Physical Therapist to ensure safety and accessibility for all of our members.
- Our classes open and close with a check-in designed in partnership with an Licensed Social Worker so that we can keep a pulse on how members are doing and provide emotional support and consistency to the group.
- Each staff member has received Peer Support Certification through the State of Arizona.
- We are, also, currently in the process to work to become a Community Service Agency as part of the process to become a provider under Mercy Care Healthcare services. No agencies in Arizona provides the type of services we do; and we would be the first to become a billable service under a health insurance provider. While gym memberships have been paid for by Mercy Care, no other services in the state of Arizona provides the holistic, evidenced based approach we do.
