Virginia Association of Museums 

In 2011, VAM began an annual program entitled “Virginias Top 10 Endangered Artifacts;” the purpose of this program was to bring attention to these artifacts and sites and to address the ever-rising costs to conserve/preserve these rare treasures.
VAM's nationally recognized Top 10 Endangered Artifacts Program highlight Virginia's underrepresented communities and their stories.  No matter their size or location, all of Virginia's museums preserve, protect and tell the stories of all of our citizens.  This year's program will introduce you to some of the outstanding examples of the artifacts behind these stories.

This program has helped over 200 museums bring attention to unique artifacts in their collection, and conserve important pieces of Virginia history.

How does Virginia's Top 10 Endangered Artifacts program work?

Virginia museums nominate artifacts that have a historic or cultural significance to the organization or represent the lesser known stories in their community, and require some level of conservation assistance.

Following a thorough review process by an independent committee of experts, ten artifacts are chosen to participate in the program.  

A public online voting competition and a final review by the committee determine the “winners."

Each winning site receives a monetary award for conservation or preservation efforts.

The Virginia Association of Museums (VAM) is a 501c3 organization based in Richmond, Virginia. The association provides advocacy, professional education and support to all Virginia and Washington, DC museums. We have over 3,000 members, consisting of individuals, businesses, and member organizations. These range from historic house museums, botanical gardens, aquariums, zoos, and children’s museums to historical societies, art museums, galleries, battlefields, and military museums.
