Malama Kula

Mālama Kula was born on the day that the town of Kula nearly burned. 

In the days that followed the Kula Fire, where 20 homes were lost, the community rallied and gathered by the hundreds, helping save properties, helping save homes and helping neighbors, family, and strangers clean up what was either left of their house, or all that was nearly lost. 

It was chainsaws and wood chippers and water tanks filled up and loaded in back of old trucks. It was people donating whatever they had (and in many cases, what they didn't), and heroically rising to help in a moment when community needed them most. 

It was a hectic, chaotic, and inspiring time, where the people of Kula rose up and took action; no waiting for help—just go. It was also a catalyzing, wake-up type of moment, where people began to realize the challenges facing our rural community, and Mālama Kula aims to address them and tackle the issues head on. 

The organization's founder, Kyle Ellison, nearly lost his house in the fire and was displaced along with his family, yet despite the challenges of having nowhere to call home, rose up and immediately jumped into action to serve his community and neighbors. 

He, along with a legion of volunteers who have tirelessly stepped up to help, has been boots on the ground in Kula since Day 1, helping out fellow fire victims wherever, and however, he can. 

And even though Mālama Kula was born as a response to the fire, the organization is about much more than simply addressing this response. It's a call to action, a catalyst for change, and a rallying point for our Kula community to come together and address the issues that put our community at risk.
