Kahoolawe Island Reserve Commission, sponsored by Pacific American Foundation

Kaho'olawe is the smallest of the eight main islands in the Hawaiian archipelago.  After 200 years of uncontrolled grazing by goats, sheep and cattle, and another 50 years of misuse as a live-fire training and bombing range by the U.S. Navy, approximately 30% of the island is barren due to severe erosion and a large proportion of its vegetation is alien invasive species. 

Not everyone who wants to go to Kaho'olawe, can. The islands remote location, risk of unexploded ordinance, and limited accessibility makes traveling to Kaho'olawe challenging. 

Our solution is to bring Kaho'olawe to you, through our education center, right here on Maui. This facility will give visitors and residents the opportunity to deeply connect with Kaho`olawe’s history and cultural resources through artifacts, images, interactive displays, and story telling. This center will have exhibitions, galleries, archival spaces, auditorium, and classrooms. You will have the chance to learn about our restoration activities through hands on plantings and cultural activities in our demonstration gardens. Our center will show the world who we are as a people, our struggle for Hawaiian identity and preserve the stories of Kaho`olawe for the next generation.
