Black Caucus of the American Library Association

Officially formed in 1970, the Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA), was established to serve as an advocate for the development, promotion, and improvement of library services and resources to the nation’s African American community; and provides leadership for the recruitment and professional development of African American librarians. 

Now more than ever we as an organization, as a community, are needed. With your assistance, we have supported generations of African American information professionals. Collectively, we have challenged failing industry standards and insisted on achieving a higher benchmark for our community and allies. 

During these unprecedented times, The Black Caucus of the American Library Association continues to organize, plan, and sustain initiatives designed to support African American information professionals. 

We continue to celebrate our 50th anniversary. A $50 gift, $1 for each year of our work, will support African American librarians and the communities we serve. 

We continue to plan and organize the National Conference of African American Librarians (NCAAL), which is designed to bring together library workers to learn, explore, and engage with each other. Check out our website at
