We're so happy to share that the new school year began in June and excited that it's happening at our brand new school compound in Mae Pa, Thailand, very close to the Thai-Burma border. The mountains of Burma can be seen from every corner of the land which three schools now share. The school was made possible by the support of Child's Dream Foundation and it truly feels like home. Students now have proper classrooms to focus on their studies, a dining area and kitchen to share meals together, and a dormitory that provides them a safe, peaceful place to rest, without worrying that neighbors will complain.
This year our program was able to accept 55 incredible students into our boarding school. Chosen from nearly 400 applicants, these young men and women from Burma are passionate in their effort to continue learning despite the challenges they face from war, discrimination, and displacement. They come from refugee camps, migrant communities and IDP areas, and represent seven diverse ethnicities: Karen, Kachin, Karenni, Burmese, Lisu, Chin, and Rakhine. Now they're living, learning, and growing together as one family. At Minmahaw, students study basic academics: Math, Science, English, and Social Studies. They also build life skills, prepare for future opportunities in higher education and/or employment, and find the confidence to take their next steps. They are driven, caring, and committed to giving back to their communities which makes this school an inspiration to be a part of.
With the new building, rent is no longer a budget item and funds are being reallocated to compensate teachers, many of whom are graduates of Minmahaw School. They have gone on to graduate from universities all over southeast Asia, Europe and the U.S. and many have become outstanding teachers! Intent on giving back to their compatriots, they have come to Minmahaw School to teach and it feels like full circle now as Minmahaw begins its 19th year. That former Minmahaw School graduates have returned to teach the newest Minmahaw students SHOUTS success for this program! The dream has always been for teachers from Burma to teach the students of Minmahaw School, while foreigners continue to volunteer and offer knowledge towards the success of the school. Minmahaw has endured and thrived through so much change and upheaval which demonstrates the dedication and commitment to success from all corners of the world.
