Ahsoka's Journey to Adoption
Cover completed veterinary care of $6500 plus future veterinary care and food.
Ahsoka's journey with #LovePup started when she and her sisters were found being given away at a flea market in Florence on May 3rd. Two kind humans wanted to make sure that they did not end up in the wrong hands, so they quickly claimed the three girls. Covered in fleas and very hungry, the girls were given hefty meals, baths, and a treatment to get rid of the fleas.
The two good Samaritans happen to be neighbors of one of the #LovePup staff. Knowing this, the people asked if #LovePup would be able to take in the puppies. Luckily, our rescue had vacancy, and we were able to take them in to our shelter the next day. Acquiring them on May the 4th, we decided to name the puppies after female Jedi- Ahsoka, Leia, & Shaak Ti- henceforth being called The Jedi Puppies. It was clear from the beginning that Ahsoka's start to life was a little more difficult than her sisters'. She was half the size of Shaak Ti, acted like she had never been fed before, and was overall less energetic than them.
As we do with all of our pups, we took the girls to see a doctor at one of the trusted Lovet Pet Health Care locations. It was there that a doctor ran a basic CBC panel for Ahsoka, as well as a Parvo test, and we submitted a fecal sample. The Parvo test result was negative, and the blood test results showed no significant abnormalities. The fecal sample came back positive for Coccidia, so treatment started as soon as the puppies returned to the #LovePup shelter.
After two rounds of treatment- lasting a total of 38 days- we were finally able to move forward with the puppies' veterinary care in getting them prepared to be ready for adoption. However, during that time of a little over a month, Ahsoka continued to not gain weight at the same pace as her sisters; she had also become lethargic and lost her appetite. We did blood work again and took X-rays of her entire body to possibly show any abnormalities from her mouth, all the way to her intestines. Nothing irregular was found... It was decided that once Ahsoka was cured of Coccidia, we would proceed to do more tests to try to figure out why she would not gain weight.
On June 19th, Leia and Shaak Ti were adopted; Ahsoka remained in our care.
In addition to the X-rays and blood tests she had already received, Ahsoka went through a barium swallow study, an ultrasound, a GI panel, a biopsy of her intestines, more blood work, and has been prescribed a specific diet- racking up a total of $6,472.92 in veterinary costs. A total of five Lovet doctors treated Ahsoka along with three specialists analyzed X-ray images, ultrasound images, and the biopsy. After all of that... No irregular findings of any kind!
After 98 days and almost $6500 later, it has finally been determined that Ahsoka just has an extreme case of Runt-ism! We will be continuing the prescription diet for a few more weeks. If there is no substantial change in her weight, then we will change her diet to a food that has had great reviews for weight gain (but is also very expensive!)
We always do all that is necessary for our #LovePup dogs to live a long and happy life. But with doing so, comes the need to replenish the funds used for one pup so we can help another with severe medical needs in the future.
The goal is set to $7500 to cover the near $6500 in veterinary care we have already spent, and another $1000 in future veterinary care plus food and supplements. Please donate to Ahsoka's care fund.
Ahsoka is now ready for adoption. We will be looking for a family who is financially stable- given that Ahsoka is starting life with her genetics against her. She is a happy, loving, and calmly playful puppy who enjoys the company of both dogs and cats alike.
