Non-Profit Board Participation: the Saint John's Difference

Non-profit board participation is a cornerstone to the success of any non-profit organization. With over one-hundred Foundation Trustees, come listen as Bob Klein, President & CEO of Saint John’s Health Center Foundation, describes what has made Saint John’s a particular success in this area, including the Foundation’s process for choosing new board members, involvement of our fundraising staff both before and after a Trustee is approved, and finally, the unique culture that has made Saint John’s Health Center Foundation a much sought after organization to be involved.

Speaker:

Robert Klein, President & CEO Saint John's Health Center Foundation

Bob Klein oversees the management of the Saint John’s Health Center Foundation and philanthropic development efforts for Providence Saint John’s Health Center, Saint John’s Cancer Institute and Pacific Neuroscience Institute. He plays a leadership role in the creation and implementation of a comprehensive fund development program in support of their respective clinical and research missions. Bob’s career with Saint John’s spans 30 years. Bob also serves as an advisor to both the health center and cancer institute Board of Directors.

Following the 1994 earthquake, Bob played an integral role in supporting the Foundation’s initial $125 million Capital Campaign as a fundraiser and a friend-raiser for the replacement campus. Subsequently, he oversaw the completion of an additional $100 million capital campaign that enabled Saint John’s to open the first phase of the new campus in the summer of 2009. Most recently, Bob oversaw the completion of the $213 million Power of Partnership campaign for Saint John’s, the most successful campaign in the history of the foundation.

Prior to joining Saint John’s, Bob worked in real estate development and brokerage, and corporate finance. He played professional football with the Los Angeles Rams (1969-77) and the San Diego Chargers (1977-80) and was an All-America collegiate player at the University of Southern California (USC). Bob was drafted in the first round of the NFL draft and remained in Southern California for his entire career.

Graduating with a BS in business administration in 1969, Bob received an MBA degree from USC in 1974 with an emphasis in real estate.

Bob is very active in the community and serves on the boards of several local nonprofits. A native of Los Angeles, Bob resides in Pacific Palisades with his wife Jo Ann.
