Help us Purchase Instruments for Kids Music Classes
Our goal is to obtain enough instruments for a group of 20 students to be able to play all together without having idle hands.
[TL;DR - CSP teaches how to play traditional Afro-Brazilian instruments to various cultural rhythms to underserved communities in Baltimore and we need more instruments to increase our impact and enhance the learning experience.]
Capoeira Social Project (CSP) is an educational non-profit organization that provides holistically enriching instruction in capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art, and movement form. From the beginning our mission has been to provide a program for underprivileged and marginalized children (specifically ages 7 – 18) by using a blend of creativity, education, and self-expression, to enthusiastically empower and educate. We are located in Baltimore, Maryland with extended partners in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais Brazil. Capoeira is a foundational building block for our program as we utilize the unique origins of the Afro-Brazilian martial arts disguised as dance combined with acrobatics and music to train our students.
Our training empowers the youth to be intelligent and resourceful, strong and agile, and most importantly self-aware and self-confident. By acquiring these vital qualities students have an opportunity to succeed in life. This is the place to describe your cause. Keep in mind that your donors come to your fundraising page from different sources with or without previous knowledge of your organization.
Our Performing Arts program originally focused solely around capoeira, has now expanded to include 4 additional dances as well as the instruments needed to play these rhythms authentically.
CSP offers instruction in capoeira, a Brazilian martial art that combines movement, music, language, and history. Playing percussion instruments, singing in Portuguese and moving to the musical rhythm are all integral parts to the martial art.
Along with this art form CSP also offers instruction in Maculele, an Afro-Indigenous Brazilian stick-fight dance.
Samba de roda is another dance and musical style commonly featured in capoeira organizations. While CSP offers this style, CSP is the only group on the east coast that offers instruction in Samba de Coco, a dance and rhythm from NE Brazil with Afro-Indigenous roots.
Additionally, frevo, a fast pasted dance style from the same region as coco rounds out the performing arts program. Along with the dances, playing the instruments for these rhythms is also taught.
CSP works with independent artisans throughout Brazil to obtain our instruments. In this way we offer our students an authentic musical experience while also strengthening and supporting this artesian work which keeps classic art traditions alive.
CAPOEIRA, MACULELE, and SAMBA DE RODA
Capoeira, Maculele, and Samba de Roda are traditional rhythms often found together as the instruments needed for each are the same. Capoeira utilizes three berimbaus each with a different note. These single stringed instruments create a chord together.
