As a board member of PLUS ME, my goal is to inspire my network to join me in bringing connection & confidence to classrooms.
Over the past year, PLUS ME had the opportunity to engage with thousands of middle and high school students virtually via our storytelling workshops. While we have shared laughs, smiles, and stories with them, our team has also seen firsthand the direct impact that COVID-19 has had on the social and emotional wellbeing of youth in our city. With schools transitioning back to in-person learning, we see the urgent need to increase our reach and bring more PLUS ME workshops to classrooms throughout Los Angeles.
Facts You Show Know:
- Research has shown that teenagers will need more social-emotional support than ever before
- A national poll shows that 46% of parents say their teen has shown signs of a new or worsening mental health condition since the beginning of the pandemic
- Among teenagers between 13 - 18 years old, research suggests that 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys have experience new or worsening anxiety
PLUS ME is committed to helping fill this large social-emotional needs gap that students will face in the 2021 - 2022 school year.
In addition to working with our current school partners and impacting over 10,000 students next school year through our storytelling workshop series, our goal is to empower YOU and our donor community to support us as we raise funds to adopt 50 additional classrooms for the upcoming school year.
All funds raised through this campaign will go directly to providing free My Story Matters Journals, our 100-page personal narrative guides, and powerful relatable role models who will share their success stories to 2,000 students from 50 classrooms in Los Angeles County this fall. These resources will provide youth with the opportunity to self-reflect on the traumas that COVID-19 brought, learn how to share parts of their stories and connect with each other, and build their self-confidence as they navigate this new chapter in their lives.
We will be adopting the classrooms of the following teachers in Los Angeles Unified School District & Long Beach Unified School District:
- Ryan Ballard - Drew Middle School
- Guadalupe Cardona - Roybal Learning Center
- Nataly Casillas - Gage Middle School
- Qui Diaz - Sotomayor Art/Science Magnet
- Cynthia Gotler - Nava Learning Academy
- Jessica Hernandez - Equitas Academy No. 2
- Justin Hogate - Stephens Middle School
- Diego Morales - Obama Global Prep Academy
- Graciela Perez - Contreras Learning Complex
- Carlos Sanchez - Bethune Middle School
