SC3 Kids is a subsidiary group under the Sickle Cell Community Consortium ran by and for children and teens affected by sickle cell disease. This cohort includes people living with sickle cell, siblings, children of adults living with sickle cell and extended family members. The current project manager is Sophia Rose, an 11 year old warrior based in Raleigh, NC. The current SC3 Leadership team developed the Sunshine Basket project to fill a gap in mental health needs of fellow young warriors that are inpatient at local hospitals. The goal of the project is to provide baskets filled with frequently overlooked basic need items coupled with activities and decorations to inspire a positive hospital environment for young (0-17) sickle cell patients. The leadership committee has conducted in person and on line polls to gather information about what items to include, where to pilot the project and how to identify patients and deliver packages. Funding has been secured and a CBO has been identified for each pilot state- Georgia, North Carolina, and Texas. In addition, the Top Ladies of Distinction are assisting with collection and distribution of items on a local level in the Atlanta area and our project manager is extending an invitation to additional chapters in Texas and North Carolina to join the project.
