The Power of a Neighborhood That Refuses to Be Overlooked

In the heart of Newark sits a neighborhood with a long memory and an even longer spirit. Clinton Hill is a place where elders tell stories on front porches, where children play on familiar blocks, and where neighbors know each other by name. It is a community filled with history, culture, and resilience. Yet for too long, Clinton Hill has faced challenges that threatened its vibrancy. Schools needed support, families needed resources, and residents needed to know they were not alone.

 was born from that need. Not from an office, but from the voices of the people who live here. It was created to honor the past, respond to the present, and build a future where every resident feels seen, valued, and empowered.

From the beginning, the mission was simple but powerful:

Parents needed safe spaces for their children, so CHCA launched programs that nurtured creativity and confidence. Seniors needed connection, so CHCA created spaces for them to gather and belong. Families needed stability, so CHCA fought for better housing conditions and access to essential services. Young people needed guidance, so CHCA built pathways for leadership, learning, and opportunity.

But what truly defines CHCA is not just the programs. It is the way the organization listens. Every initiative, every event, and every campaign begins with one question: What does our community need, and how can we show up with love and action?

Over time, CHCA has become the heartbeat of Clinton Hill.

The advocacy that ensures Clinton Hill’s voice is heard and respected.

Most importantly, CHCA stands in the gaps, those hard-to-name spaces where people fall through. When a family needs emergency help after a crisis, CHCA is there. When a child needs mentoring or a meal, CHCA is there. When a resident feels forgotten, CHCA reminds them that they matter.

And now, with the Clinton Hill Proud Campaign, CHCA is calling on residents, supporters, and partners to stand together in a movement bigger than any one person. A movement that honors the stories of the elders who paved the way, uplifts the families who keep the community alive, and inspires the next generation to dream boldly.
